A Taste of Japan: Journeying into the World of Authentic Ramen

Ramen – Japanese Noodle Dish

Ramen is a popular Japanese dish that consists of wheat noodles served in a savory broth, often with meat, vegetables, and other toppings. Here’s a simple recipe for making ramen at home:

Ingredients:

  • 4 packs of ramen noodles
  • 6 cups chicken or vegetable broth
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 1 small carrot, julienned
  • 1 cup sliced mushrooms
  • 1 cup chopped bok choy or other leafy greens
  • 2 tbsp soy sauce
  • 2 tbsp mirin
  • 1 tbsp miso paste
  • 1 tbsp sesame oil
  • 1 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 4 boiled eggs, peeled and halved
  • 1 cup sliced cooked meat (such as pork or chicken)
  • 1/4 cup chopped scallions
  • Nori seaweed sheets, sliced into small pieces (optional)

Instructions:

  1. In a large pot, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat. Add the garlic and onion and sauté for 2-3 minutes, until softened.
  2. Add the chicken or vegetable broth, soy sauce, mirin, and miso paste to the pot and stir to combine. Bring the broth to a boil, then reduce the heat to low and simmer for 10-15 minutes to allow the flavors to meld.
  3. While the broth is simmering, cook the ramen noodles according to the package instructions. Drain and set aside.
  4. In a separate skillet, heat the sesame oil over medium-high heat. Add the sliced mushrooms and sauté for 2-3 minutes, until softened.
  5. Add the julienned carrots and chopped bok choy to the skillet and sauté for another 2-3 minutes, until the vegetables are slightly softened.
  6. To assemble the ramen bowls, divide the cooked ramen noodles among 4 serving bowls.
  7. Ladle the hot broth over the noodles, making sure to distribute the vegetables evenly among the bowls.
  8. Top each bowl with some sliced cooked meat, a boiled egg half, and a sprinkle of chopped scallions and sliced nori seaweed (if using).
  9. Serve the ramen hot, and enjoy your delicious homemade ramen!

Note: You can customize the toppings for the ramen to your liking, using a variety of meats, vegetables, or other ingredients. Additionally, you can make the broth in advance and store it in the refrigerator or freezer until ready to use.
